What are they and why?

Keyboard shortcuts are key combinations that can save you time by not having to move your hand to the mouse, or by doing common tasks without having to click multiple times or move the mouse pointer to a small target. Usually you will hold one or two keys (shift, ctrl, alt) and then press another key at the same time.

Selected Shortcuts

Google has an extensive list of shortcuts available. Here are just a few to get you started:

Tab and Window Shortcuts

  • Ctrl+n - Open a new window
  • Ctrl+t - Open a new tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+t - Reopen a tab that you closed
  • Ctrl+Tab - Jump to the next tab
  • Ctrl+Shift+Tab - Jump to the previous tab
  • F11 - Toggle fullscreen mode in Chrome
A favorite combination of mine is when I want to search for more information about something I see on a page:

Highlight the text
you want to search
Ctrl+C to copy it
Ctrl+T for a new tab
Ctrl+V and Enter to paste and search

You can keep holding Ctrl the whole time, so it's a quick sequence of Ctrl+ C,T,V, Enter to search.

Chrome Feature Shortcuts

  • Ctrl+Shift+B - Show or hide the bookmarks bar
  • Ctrl+H - Open the history page
  • Ctrl+J - Open the downloads page

Webpage Shortcuts

  • Ctrl and + - Zoom in
  • Ctrl and - - Zoom out
  • Ctrl + 0 - Return to the default zoom
  • Space - Scroll the page one screen at a time
  • Home - Scroll to the top of the page
  • End - Scroll to the bottom of the page
